RE: winter camping

WE winter camped in the Poconos for a number of years. Used 2 small ceramic heaters that usually did the job - augmented with the regular furnace in the RV. No, we weren't 'toasty', but it was comfortable enough with sweats on! Just leave one of the vents open a little and dehumidifying probably won't be necessary. WE had electricity but no running water. Dealt with that pretty easily. Used a soft plastic 2.5 gallon jug with a pet cock on it for our cold water supply and used an old 50 cup coffee pot (removed the basket) for our hot water. We showered in the bath house of the campground. I could wash dishes, wash our hands, cook, etc. with the water in the rig. We never took our slide in - no need to, even in the snow. We kept a gallon of water in the bathroom for flushing the toilet - just refilled it in the bathouse when needed. We had a sewered site, which helped. We kept the black water and grey water valves closed until we had to empty. We made sure we put a gallon of windshield washer fluid down the toilet and down the sink drains to make sure the valves would not freeze. This worked great and really a cheap way to make sure everything worked well. I really miss winter camping. It was a bit more work, but every second was worth it. Nothing better than sitting around a campfire when it's really needed!!

RE: Going To Disney In October, Camping No./So. Carolina Border

South of the Border is where we always stopped on our trips from NJ to Orlando. Very, very easy access, inexpensive, and kids can have some fun. just wouldn't eat there again! The 'truck stop diner' or whatever it's called is 1950's motif, and I think that's the last time they updated the menu! Other places there are a bit better, but not worth the price. I'd just cook in the rig or stop somewhere beforehand. There really is nothing in that area except SOB. The indoor pool is great though and the kids always looked forward to using it. Another option is Sleepy Bear RV Park in Lumberton, NC. Again, right off of I 95 (Exit 14 I believe) with easy access. A bit 'long in the tooth', but also good for an overnight stay while traveling. Of the 2, I'd go for SOB, just MHO. Also a KOA in Florence, SC, about 45 minutes from NC/SC border. Again, close to 95. Have a safe trip.

RE: Need help in finding Pocono, Pa. extended stay site

Know there is a place in the Poconos with a lake. Think it's called Eagle Lake. Here's a link: http://www.eaglelakerealty.com/Packages.html Haven't been there in a while, but it was nice about 10 years ago.

RE: myth busted

DH and I have been RVing for over 30 years and we have NEVER, NEVER forgotten to do the 'walk around' before driving away. This include checking the air pressure in the tires, as well as all turn signals, brake lights, head lights and tail lights. It's actually my job to let him know everything works as I walk around the rig just before we take off. Would nver think of pulling away from a camp site without making sure all the necessary safety measures were inspected. DH always checks the braking system, adn we both check to make sure our chains that serve as protection if the hitch should ever break are as they should be. Sorry to say we're not so thorough with our everyday cars. It might be a good practice to get into!

RE: Favorite toy?

Agree with trnfla - a full cooler is absolutely required! Also, our small Weber grill. With our cast iron griddle, use it to cook almost everything outside. Wouldn't go anywhere without the Weber.

RE: "One-The Show", Myrtle Beach-a critique

Carolina Opry now has a show called "Vibrations" - 60's, 70's and 80's music that is really well done.

RE: Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede, Myrtle Beach-a critique

Even locals like Dolly Parton's dinner theater. Just a heads up - if you're one of those who won't eat food with your fingers, bring your own silverware. One of our son's friends refused to eat with her hands and the waitstaff simply said - we have no silverware! Fortunately, an older couple sitting in the area had a spare set of plastic, so the evening was saved! The entertainment is worth the price. It's also pretty easy to find coupons for lower prices either in the local paper or in the coupon books found at every grocery store and probably in every campground's store. Two other places to go for good shows are the Carolina Opry (right next door to Dolly's place) and Legends in Concert, south of MB in a town called Surfside Beach. http://www.carolinaopry.com/ and http://www.legendsinconcert.com/locations/myrtle-beach/ Neither is a dinner show, but they are fun none the less. There's also the Alabama Theater at Barefoot Landing http://www.alabama-theatre.com/ There's also the Medieval Times dinner show, great fun for everyone. Like Dolly's, bring your own forks! One show I would not recommend is the Murder mystery dinner theater at House of Blues. The food was awful, the murder mystery poorly presented, and, worst of all, the room is far too small and narrow for any kind of successful performance to work. Here's a link for all the info you might need for shows in MB: http://www.myrtlebeachinfo.com/mb-cvb/Vacations_Getaways/Live_Entertainment_Theaters.html

RE: winter camping question

With day time temps well above freezing, you should have no problems. Agree about the water hose, but you can refill your house tank anytime during the day you need. Have a great time.

RE: I couldn't believe my ears!!

Agree a phone call AND letter to the manager AND ownership group are in order, if only to express your anger and disgust at the way they treat their loyal campers. You bought from them, so you're not even in 'violation' of their policy! BTW, our family had a seasonal site in a south Jersey campground for many years without sewer. If the campground supplies a 'pump out' service, it's no inconvenience at all. What I would do if that is all they offer to you is insist you receive a reduced rate for that service, since you bought your rig through them. Better yet, they should supply pump outs for free!!!! After all, sewered sited are reserved for those who buy from them. Free pump outs would be a lot like having a sewered site. Just an idea.

mounting motorcycle

DH has a Honda Silver Wing 600 cc scooter that weighs approx. 500 lbs. Does anyone have ideas/suggestions as to how we might safely mount something to the back of our 31' Prowler Lynx so we could bring his bike with us when we travel? Thanks in advance for any help.

RE: Gettysburg help please

In regards to touring the battlefield, I agree the CD is good. However, there is nothing better than hiring a licensed battlefield guide. He/She will take you for the tour in your own car. The fee is around $50 for over 2 hours and it is, IMHO, the best $ you could spend to learn as much as you can from someone whose expertise must be proven before they can be licensed. If nothing has changed, you may find one at the Visitor's Center. I would suggest getting there near opening time so you won't be dissappointed that all have been taken. RE: EZ pass on new Jersey Garden state Parkway

No restrictions, even though some signs might indicate that there are. Use any EZ pass lane and you'll be fine. Enjoy AC! Good Luck!!

RE: Route for Outer Banks, NC to Huntington Beach, SC

Not an easy trip, for sure. We have gone from Nags Head to Myrtle Beach several times and there's just no good way. Forget about taking the ferries - you'll drive less but the time it takes just isn't worth it. Taking 17 all the way is very time consuming. Traffic can be bad through Jacksonville NC and Wilmington (although there is now a way around Wilmington on a new Interstate bypass). We have taken 64 West to U S 13 South (around Greenville). There we pick up Rt 11 South and towards Kinston where we get onto U S 258 South to Rt 24 towards Jacksonville (It's 4 lanes). In Jacksonville we pick up 17 South to Wilmington. We take the new Interstate bypass around Wilmington to return to 17 South to Huntington Beach. This is not as direct as Rt 17, but it has always been quicker - at least by an hour. We've never hit any traffic except in Jacksonville and a little in Wilmington. The only other way we have gone that has made any sense is to take 17 all the way down.

RE: campground reservations

Agree with first post suggesting you stay close to home for your 'shakedown' trip. Also agree that reservations are a good idea if you are planning ahead. Nothing is more frustrating than pulling into a campground after traveling and not being able to get a site that fits your needs. If you want a full service site (w/e/sewer hook ups) it is always best to reserve it. Many campgrounds may have a site for you, but many also fill up their sewered sites very quickly. Enjoy your first trip!!! We've been RVing for over 30 years, and it's great!

RE: Better way to 95 from Myrtle Beach

Sorry some found the directions 'convoluted and non specific'. I tried to make them easy to follow. DH even suggested I not get too detailed as some might look too hard for a landmark and miss road signs. I would be happy to respond with more details if anyone would like to PM. Previous post was correct about anyone camping in the northern campgrounds (for Yankees, that's the area 'at the top of' the Myrtle Beach (aka Grand Strand) area!!!) Rt. 31 does cross Rt. 22 (Which is also called Veterans Highway). BTW, I am a 'Yankee' originally from NJ! DH and I have made the trip from the Northeast to Myrtle Beach over 40 times). Didn't know driving directions needed translations for drivers from different geographic areas!!! LOL!!!

Better way to 95 from Myrtle Beach

One of the worst parts of the trip to Myrtle Beach, SC is the last hour or so when you're sitting in traffic going from I-95 to the campgrounds. My DH and I have found what we feel is a much less stressful, even quicker way to make that connection: When leaving the MB campgrounds to get to I-95: There is a far better way to get to the interstate than taking 501 back towards Florence. Take Rt. 544 West (straight across from the entrance to Ocean Lakes Campground) to Highway 31 North. (It's actually a newer road that is basically a bypass of Hwy 17 Bypass!). Take 31 North to Highway 9 towards Dillon. Go to Rt. 701 North near Loris towards Tabor City. In Tabor City you'll make a left turn onto 410 North - past Daddy Joe's Jellystone Campground and the Budget Inn. You'll be going towards Chadbourn. Take 410 North is only a 2 lane road but very little traffic. You'll meet up with U S Highway 74 West after approx. 20 minutes - "Go West, Young Man" towards Lumberton where you will come to I-95 North. To get from I-95 to the campgrounds, just reverse these directions! You'll miss all that mess on Rt. 501 coming out of MB and will pick up the Interstate around exit 14 in NC. It has cut off at least 45 minutes to an hour in our many trips north from Myrtle Beach. There are actually a couple other 'back road' routes that we have taken over the years, but my DH and I have found this one the best. Almost no traffic, an easy ride, and much less stress. Hope this helps.

RE: Myrtle Beach,s Pirateland in october

Previous post was correct - depends on the weather! October is the very best time to visit MB - weather is comfortable and huge crowds are gone! If you would like more info. about the area, feel free to PM. We've lived here for 4 years and camped in the area for almost 30.
